Ajax Fans Abandoned Match Against Feyenoord
A football match between Dutch rivals Ajax and Feyenoord was abandoned on Sunday after Ajax fans began throwing objects onto the pitch.
The match was suspended 11 minutes into the second half, with Feyenoord leading 3-0. Ajax's disappointing campaign hit a new low after they were beaten 6-0 away at rivals Feyenoord. The club's previous biggest losses to Feyenoord were a 9-4 defeat in 1964 and a 6-1 in 1960.
The Dutch football association KNVB said in a statement that the match would be decided by the competition committee. The committee will meet on Tuesday to decide whether the match will be replayed or if Feyenoord will be awarded a 3-0 victory.
The trouble began when Ajax fans started throwing objects onto the pitch after Feyenoord scored their third goal. The referee stopped the match and ordered the players off the pitch. The fans continued to throw objects and the match was eventually abandoned.
Ajax have been fined several times this season for fan misbehavior. In December, the club was fined €10,000 after their fans threw objects onto the pitch during a match against PSV Eindhoven. In January, the club was fined €5,000 after their fans set off fireworks during a match against AZ Alkmaar.
