China To Build Namibias Largest Solar Plant

China to Build Namibia's Largest Solar Plant

Namibia Signs Deal for a 455-Megawatt Solar Plant

Namibian president Hage Geingob witnessed the signing of a $247 million deal with Chinese firms to build the country's largest solar power plant. This project is part of Namibia's ambitious renewable energy goals and will help to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

The project will be built in two phases:

Phase 1 will see the construction of a 225-megawatt solar plant, while phase 2 will add an additional 230 megawatts of capacity. The project is expected to be completed by 2024 and will generate enough electricity to power around 200,000 homes.

The solar plant will be built by a consortium of Chinese companies, including:

  • China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC)
  • China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC)
  • Power China International Group (PCIG)

The project is being financed by the China Development Bank and the Commercial Bank of Namibia. Once completed, the solar plant will be the largest in Namibia and one of the largest in Africa.

Namibia has set a target of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The solar plant is a major step towards achieving this goal and will help to reduce Namibia's carbon footprint. The project will also create jobs and boost the local economy.

The deal was signed during a visit by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to Namibia.

Wang said that the solar plant project is a symbol of the strong ties between China and Namibia. He also said that China is committed to supporting Namibia's development and will continue to provide assistance in areas such as infrastructure, energy, and agriculture.

President Geingob thanked China for its support and said that the solar plant project will help Namibia to achieve its renewable energy goals.

He also said that Namibia is looking forward to further strengthening its ties with China.

The solar plant project is a significant development for Namibia and will help to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and boost its renewable energy sector.

The project is also a symbol of the strong ties between China and Namibia and will contribute to the development of both countries.
